The projectaims to recognise and make visible the violence and racism experienced by the people of Malmö during the years 2003-2010 when the racist serial killer Peter Mangs subjected the city to his terror.
A racism that did not end in direct violence, but continued through the police and the media's suspicion of victims and the passivity of politicians. Since then, neither politicians nor representatives of political power have initiated a deeper discussion about racism and its emergence until now, when the City of Malmö has responded to the initiative of the Anti-Racist Monument Association.
We have designed our work to start a public dialogue about racism and its counter-images. In addition to making racist violence visible and accountable, we also want to recognise and learn from the collective and political memory culture that exists in the city.
To you who are the keepers of our memories…
Which stories become part of our common history? Which memories are portrayed and which experiences are preserved? What and whose words form the story of Malmö and, by extension, Sweden?
The City of Malmö has in 2022 commissioned Amfi to produce The Archive of Forgetting, a community-based project in three acts. The central idea for the project is designed by artists working as members of Amfi: Saga Gärde (director), Felicia Mulinari (poet, playwright), Thomas Romlöv (video designer), Sarah Nakiito (costume designer), Victoria Percovich Gutierrez (sustainability strategist), and Athena Farrokhzad (poet, playwright).
The Archive of Forgetting is a component of the project Anti-Racist Monument, financed by the City of Malmö and initiated as a result of community activists’ desire to remember the victims of racist serial killer Peter Mangs. Since 2022, the project is run by the City of Malmö in collaboration with the non-profit organization Anti-Racist Monument.
Editing, postproduction and animation was done at KubKub Malmö.
